On the occasion of the Francophonie Language Week 2018 and in celebration of 70 years of friendship between Switzerland and India, swissnex India – Consulate General of Switzerland in Bangalore invite you to join us for an exciting evening with Swiss cartoonist Patrick Chappatte and Indian cartoonist Nala Ponnappa. The artists will share their perspectives of cartooning in Switzerland and India, respectively. The session will be moderated by Anindya Roy, a resident artist of Pro Helvetia New Delhi with the focus on the craft and skill of political cartooning, the process, research, the responsibility, interesting anecdotes from work, travel and lives of the participating cartoonists.


Meet our cartoonists:


Patrick Chappatte is an editorial cartoonist for The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Le Temps and Neue Zürcher Zeitung (www.globecartoon.com). He is also a graphic reporter, using the techniques of graphic novels to tell news stories (www.graphicjournalism.net). Through his work, he highlights the power of cartoons and graphic design as a medium of political satire and criticism, along with conveying the key message of Switzerland’s commitment to democracy, freedom of expression and role in Europe.
Patrick Chappatte
An architecture graduate by profession, Ponnappa returned to India in 1982 after working overseas to explore his creative skills in the field of cartooning. This medium has been his full-time livelihood ever since, and his works have appeared in major Indian publications. His current work appears daily in the Times of India, Bangalore edition and the Economic and Political Weekly, once a fortnight. He has won international recognition in Cartoon competitions in various countries, South Korea, Romania, Germany, and Japan, and has been on international cartoon jury in Hannover Germany on the subject of Humankind and Energy. He currently works as a freelance cartoonist from Pune, Goa, Coorg and Bangalore.
