Swiss Knowledge Network with outposts in:
Swissnex India, Switzerland's outpost for science, technology and culture in India, is an initiative of the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Similar institutions are located in Boston, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Singapore. Our goal is to fully exploit the potential of cooperation between Switzerland and the respective host countries in the fields of higher education, research, technology, innovation and culture and to promote Switzerland as a leading country in those domains.

swissnex India is looking for an intern of Indian nationality.

Location: Bangalore

Duration: 6 -12 months
 
Qualifications:
- Masters degree (obtained in April 2011 or later)
- Interest in international scientific collaboration
- Interest in interdisciplinary projects


Tasks:

- Assist the Programme Manager with the preparation of projects
- Assist the Event and Communications Manager with the preparation of events and communication material
- Assist the Executive Assistant with logistical tasks (archiving, hotel reservations, accountancy, office supplies, production of PR material, etc.)
- Be responsible for up-dating the batchbook database
 
Working days:  Monday to Friday, 08:30 - 17:00.
 
Compensation: INR 20'000 per month.

The Systems Group of ETH Zurich is actively recruiting highly-qualified PhD and senior and Postdoctoral researchers interested in pursuing research in one or more of the following areas:

The Group was created as an open and internationally visible research environment that brings together expertise from different areas and provides the necessary critical mass to tackle large scale, long term projects. The principal language of the group is English.

Call open for Indo-Swiss Joint Research Programme - personnel exchange programme (PEP)

With a view to intensifying interaction and the scientific cooperation between Indian and Swiss scientists  institutions, the Indo Swiss Joint Research Programme (ISJRP) extends support for exchange of visits under this project based Personnel Exchange Programme (PEP), with a special emphasis on further academic training and development of young scholars.

PEP grants aim at connecting ongoing research projects in the two countries. Funding will therefore only be offered for travel and living costs. It is expected that all other costs for the exchange projects will be already available to both sides from other sources.

The following types of proposals shall not be considered:
· Applicants who have an existing collaborative project which already covers travel and living expenses;
· Purely individual visits / training programme;
· Organisation of Seminars / Workshops or participation in a Conference /Congress.

Priority research areas: All science & technology disciplines (NO social sciences & humanities)

Project duration: Up to 24 months (maximum of 4 visits from each side per project duration)

Eligibility: Scientists with an appointment as a faculty member at an eligible Swiss/Indian institution can apply as Principal Investigator (PI). The appointment of the PI must last at least until the end of the project. Additionally to the PIs, the PEP project should include at least one PhD student or postdoctoral scientist on each side. The total number of participants on each side should not exceed three.

Eligible institutions in India:
Universities, Publicly Funded Research Institutes and Labs and educational/academic Research Institutes.

Eligible institutions in Switzerland:
Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology, Cantonal Universities, Federal and Cantonal Research Institutions, Universities of Applied Sciences, other Research Institutions eligible for receiving federal funding.

Submission: Applications must be prepared jointly by the Swiss and Indian scientists and must be submitted in Switzerland and India simultaneously.

EU India call for proposal on water

The call will facilitate EU-India project mode partnershipswith a view to address select water related challenges pertaining to water purification and water reclamation-reuse through either (a) joint research leading to co-generation of new knowledge and co-development of innovative technologies/products beyond current state-of-art or (b) design-deployment of field-based solutions out of the proven technologies available in Europe for specific water challenged sites in India to assess the potential and sustainability of these technologies from both socioeconomic and technical point of view to develop scalable, sustainable and affordable solutions.

The University of Bern offers six Masters grants to international students

The Unversity of Bern offers six Mastergrants for the academic year 2012/13 for excellent international students. The grant consists of 1'600 CHF per month for the duration of the Master's programme. Application files will be examined by a selection committee. Criteria for selection are academic excellence and the candidate's potential and motivation.

Preconditions:

  • Applicants must have graduated at the latest by the end of July 2012 with at least a Bachelor's degree in the wished field of study
  • The Bachelor's or Master's degree must be from a non-swiss university
  • The applicants permanent place of residence up to now must have been outside of Switzerland


Deadline for application:

The complete application pacage must be submitted in duplicate by posal mail. It has to be arrived not later than December 1st, 2011 at the International Office at the University of Bern

Switzerland: The world's longest railway tunnel, 15. October 2010

With the final breakthrough in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on 15 October 2010, the world's longest railway tunnel has been cut. 57 kilometres long - this is a world record. A key milestone on the way to the flat route through the Swiss alps has been reached.

Winner of the TOPtoTOP Global Climate Solution Award

Mohit Agarwal is the winner of the TOPtoTOP Global Climate Solution Award. He will participate in a camp in Switzerland from 1-20 August 2010 working together with the other winners from Japan, Chile, Indonesia and China on topics of climate change. Mohit is a third year student in electrical engineering at  IIT Delhi and a passionate mountaineer. Congratulations Mohit!

Solar Impulse - Around the world in a solar plane

On 8 July 2010, Solar Impulse made a 26 hours flight purely powered by solar energy stored during the day. This is the longest and highest flight of a solar plane ever. The airplane has a wingspan of 64m and weighs 1'600kg. The carbon-fibre aircraft HB-SIA has 12'000 solar cells.

The Solar Impulse project is led by CEO André Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, Swiss president of the project and known for completing the first round-the-world flight in a hot air ballon in 1999. The test flights are coordinated by Swiss astronaut Dr. Claude Nicollier.

Solar Impulse is being developed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne EPFL (solar-impulse.epfl.ch/en/index.html) together with a large number of parter and sponsor institutions. The ultimate goal is to fly around the world on solar power. The next milestone will be crossing the Atlantic.

SwissCube, the first Swiss satellite was launched into space on 23 September 2009 at 11:51 local time from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, India. SwissCube travelled on board the Indian PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) together with 5 other nano satellites from Germany and Turkey. The pico satellite SwissCube (1kg, 10cm x 10cm x 10cm) is the first entirely-built Swiss satellite.

This endeavor is led by the EPFL Space Center in Switzerland in collaboration with several Swiss universities since 2006.

The scientific objective of the SwissCube is to study the airglow phenomena, a photoluminescence of the atmosphere occurring at approximately 100km altitude. The mission of SwissCube will last between 3 and 12 months.

Indo Swiss Public Private Partnership Pilot Programme (Indo Swiss PPP Pilot Programme)

The "Indo Swiss PPP Pilot Programme" is a new funding scheme providing support for market-oriented  R&D projects involving Swiss and Indian partners. The main goal of this program is to promote innovation in Switzerland and India. The "Indo Swiss PPP Pilot Programme" is implemented in Switzerland by the  Innovation Promotion Agency (CTI) together with EPFL.

Submission deadline: February 28, 2010

Project duration: 12-24 months

It is with the greatest regret that EPFL has to announce the postponement of the Indo-Swiss Symposium, initially scheduled on October 12th and 13th, 2009 at the EPFL.
 
EPFL has just been informed by the Department of Science & Technology that following the severe drought and the subsequent emergency measures taken by the Government of India, the Indian partners have not received the authorization to travel to Switzerland. Therefore, EPFL has been asked to postpone the Symposium to a later date.

Two professors from EPFL gave keynote speeches at IIT Bombay Techfest 2009. Prof. Dario Floreano, Director of the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems talked about "Evolution of Robots between Biology and Engineering". Prof. Henry Markram, Director of the Blue Mind Institute at EPFL presented the Blue Brain Project which focuses on neuroscience. Two researchers (A. Crespi and J. Knuesel) from the Biologically Inspired Robotics Group (BIRG) headed by Auke Ijspeert presented a "swimming salamander robot".
